What’s New in Home Brewing?
About Our Home Brewing and Winemaking Department
Harmony’s Homebrewing and Winemaking Department is excited about our new store and expanded section. We have added a cooler to help keep our yeast and hops as fresh as possible. As with every new endeavor, we are striving to provide this department’s products at a reasonable price to compete with our competitors in larger markets, and within our market share. Increasing availability of our products may fluctuate as we determine sales of particular items. Our distributor’s availability of particular items is also variable that must be taken into consideration.
Our Homebrewing section is happy to announce the availability of liquid yeast. White Lab splits are in the new cooler. Wyeast will be coming soon – hopefully by the end of the year. We have also added a few new beer kits in the Brewer’s Best section. Hopped and un-hopped malt extract tins availability has been enhanced. Please remember, you as a Harmony Food customer have the ability to special order any items from our main distributor LD Carlson. Check out their website at ldcarlson.com.
Our Winemaking section has added new varieties of yeast, again in the new cooler; Red Star Pasteur Red, Cotes des Blanc, White Labs Wine, and Mead splits are now available. Again if our stock does not meet your needs, the ldcarlson.com website has many more products available. A world of wine kits and wine yeast are available by special order.
Thanks again to our regular customers for your patronage and remember to tell your friends about Harmony Food Coop and our Homebrewing and Winemaking classes. Winemaking classes will be coming in October and November – dates yet to be determined. The Boreal Brewer’s local brew club will again be teaching brewing classes in the spring – dates also yet to be determined. Advanced wine making and homebrewing classes are being considered when the new community kitchen opens.

On October 28th the membership gathered at the United Methodist Church meeting room. Harmony’s staff prepared a fantastic tex mex dinner for our owners and it was a wonderful chance to see familiar faces and a few new faces as well. Board treasurer Mary Overlie led a great discussion on ways Harmony could strengthen the community’s connection to local and organic foods prior to the start of the official meeting. The question is also posted to Harmony’s Facebook page so if you have some ideas head over to FB and post on our wall.
Harmony’s Frozen Department received quite a boost from the expansion. The new freezer units are beautiful, huge and easy to use. It was even easier to fill them up with all of our already popular staples and the great suggestions from our very involved shoppers!
